Prepare your silk stretched on a frame for painting or SHIBORI techniques.
Sketch your design and outline with a marker so you can view it through your silk fabric. Transfer drawing onto the silk using a resists (method to keep dye confined in certain areas). Resists should to be dry prior to painting.
Choose the type of dye you will be using, there are several types on the market. I use Procion H reactive dyes with chemical water formulated for silk when painting my designs.
Prepare dye colors you will be using and start painting. Let your art dry completely and remove it from the frame.
Get your silk ready for steaming. This process is required to heat set the dye. (If no wax resist was used, it can be heat set in a dryer on a hot setting). Remove silk from the steamer and hang to cure for at least 24 hours. Rinse to remove excess dye, iron and enjoy your wearable art.
Cleaning Instructions: Most of the silk items can be hand washed with warm water and mild soap, squeeze out excess water with a towel, hang indoors or away from the sun to dry, iron on backside while still damp on a silk or low setting. Other items like the silk handbags and some Shibori items will need to be dry cleaned. |
